As per the latest report, patients who travel to other countries for treatment related to cosmetic surgeries are at an increased risk of costly complications. It is the view of the medical journal published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. On the other hand, the cost of treatment for complications and other forms of treatment may also cost the medical sector of the United States a whopping 2 billion dollars per year. Moreover, this is the report put forward by Orem Tepper who is the director of aesthetic surgery and craniofacial surgery.
The aspect of high costs for going abroad for Cosmetic Surgery and the complicated rates associated with it
As per the views of the researchers, they have identified almost 50 patients who have complications after returning to their country from another country. Most of the patients were women, and a few of them are men. The common form of cosmetic surgeries is breast augmentation, liposuction, and buttocks augmentation. As many of these service users underwent multiple processes, they witnessed many complications. The type of complications and risks are mentioned in this list:
• An approximate number of 12 patients suffered from abscesses
• Out of these 50 patients, around ten complained of the reopening of an incision
• 13 required surgery as their complications rose
• 25 patients were admitted to the emergency ward in health care homes
• May also suffered from infections that were caused by bacteria
Quite interestingly, the average treatment cost of curing these treatments is around 18,000 dollars. On the other hand, most of these costs were paid by Medicaid. As per Dr. Tepper, Medicaid pays more than 750 million dollars annually to treat patients who are suffering from the repercussions of medical tourism. On the flip side, commercial insurance companies pay more than 370 million dollars. Moreover, as per a survey, eight out of twenty patients were unhappy with their experiences of medical tourism, and many are also of the opinion that they would never go outside of their country for cosmetic surgeries. Moreover, these patients are also of the view that treatment in other nations is costly as compared to the United States and hence they have made up their mind never to go outside of United States for treatment. Moreover, as per the latest report, the trend of visiting other countries for the sake of therapy would increase among the citizens of the United States.
In this context, many experts are of the opinion that the complications in surgeries occurred as the surgeons of other nations are not so adept in their skills. Moreover, the aspect of travel may contribute to risk factors in the health of a patient. They also added that the patients need to be better trained as this can lower the complications associated with medical tourism.
